Science’s tape measure

Science has been regarded as the only means by which we can know anything so any information that cannot be verified by it is deemed null and void. By what means however can this determination be made?

Then Isaiah said, “This is the sign to you from the LORD, that the LORD will do the thing which He has spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten degrees or go backward ten degrees?”
2 KINGS 20:9

Consisting of numerous elements interacting on multiple levels, the natural world is a vast community of systemic engagement incorporating the simplest of form and function to a complexity beyond understanding. Through observation, measurement and experimentation, science studies these elements and in the form of testable explanations and predictions develops a body of knowledge about that world.

A basic observation of the natural world shows that something comes from something, that living things have a beginning and an end and that living things make simpler things of a different construct and substance to themselves. Observation from this macro perspective incorporates the sum total of the phenomenon the natural world encapsulates where all components serve to create the context in which their meaning and value is found.

Conversely, observation of the natural world from a micro perspective identifies individual phenomenon that are recreated in an environment constructed from a portion of what can be known of the natural world in order to test their perceived characteristics in reference to a proposed belief about that world. This process has paved the way for extensive technological advances with human beings creating things of ever increasing complexity yet simpler and of a different construct and substance to themselves. The possibility for evaluations to diverge from a phenomenon’s original meaning and value begin to emerge however when those evaluations are projected over time and space to make statements about the natural world as a whole.

In constructing a macro model of the natural world from the micro, an a priori commitment to consistency of natural laws and processes over time and space which cannot be verified by science is required in order to extrapolate into the unobservable past. In doing so however, the quest for knowledge about the natural world migrates from the observation of its elements to the construction of a means by which an enterprise comprised of observed phenomenon and assumption is forged, an enterprise that grows exponentially producing a model of the natural world composed of elements with an ever increasing possibility of divergence from what they purport to describe. It is only when all the information is considered that a true evaluation of the natural world as a whole can be made. Any omission or deviation from the original results in a different outcome, no matter how minor.

In projecting evaluations across time and space and applying a method of reducing explanations to the smallest possible entity it has been considered that all life evolved from a single element, from the simple to the complex. When enough time is applied, this scenario is plausible. Embedded within the evaluation however are parameters not verifiable by science and by which the observed data are interpreted and a methodology that is increasingly limited when applied to diverse interconnected systems of which the natural world as a whole is.

It could be further considered that this single element or the natural world in some form has always existed and created itself. Once again this eternal element cannot be verified by science and is an element that has created more complex yet temporal elements of a different construct and substance to itself of which science does verify. Particles have been observed to spontaneously come into and out of existence, but this has occurred within a pre existing environment created by those observing the phenomenon.

Evidence throughout the course of history and to date has revealed the existence of phenomenon associated with an entity of which science identifies as occurring beyond the observed operational processes of the natural world. Unlike a single simple element however, this entity is of a complexity beyond understanding, an entity which has always existed and which created the natural world through implementation of successive complex yet simpler systems to itself, a world of a different construct and substance, the elements of which science observes and describes.
