So Pharaoh rose in the night, he, all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was not a house where there was not one dead.
EXODUS 12:30
(The following narrative is a creative exposition based on Scripture)
Silence. Stillness. Uncertainty. Fear. What’s going to happen?
We’re all gathered together in the house. We’ve got our travel clothes on and we’re ready to go. We’re leaving this place for good but we don’t know where we’re going. They told dad to take a lamb and kill it and put it’s blood around the entry door, then we’re all to eat it before we go. Now we’re waiting. We’re all huddled in the middle of the room and watching the door. The blood’s dripping down the doorposts. It’s dark outside. Still. Quiet. Dad’s worried, he knows what’s coming.
There’s a sound far off. It’s crying. Someone’s crying. Another sound. Someone else is crying, then another, then another. Someone screams! Much crying, weeping, wailing… something horrible is happening! It’s getting louder and louder … it’s coming closer and closer. Dad’s scared. Mum starts to cry.
The door. The blood … dripping. The noise, the horrific noise! The blood … dripping … dripping. The lamb, the little lamb. Dead. The blood … the screams! Heart’s pounding, beating faster. Fear, much fear. So close, so very close … the door! Then … it passes. Crying, weeping, fading, quiet.
Still huddled in the middle of the room, we turn to each other. Safe, we’re all safe. Such relief. It passed us by. It didn’t come in. They said it would pass us by because of the blood. They said the blood was a sign for us that death wouldn’t be allowed in. The lamb, the beautiful lamb … it saved us.
